Elephant Ear Colocasia Standard
Extra Large Size: 17+" Circumference
Use this enormous size elephant ear
as the focal point for your flowerbeds, in the center of a large patio
pot or as an accent on the edge of your water garden. The broad green
leaves of this tropical plant are what earned it the nickname of elephant
ear. As with most bulbs, bigger is always better. For elephant ears
this holds true as well, since the bigger the bulb the bigger the leaves.

Details
• Light: full sun to partial shade
• Height: 4-6’ (depending on light,
water, growing season, etc.)
• Hardiness: Perennial in zone 8+, annual
in colder zones
• Planting: Soil must be above 55F at
night for one week before planting outside. To get a head start, plant
indoors 4 weeks before you plan to plant outside. Plant the bulb so
its top is around 4” below ground.
• Soil: A nice light potting mix containing
bark, perlite and peat moss.
• Moisture: Keep soil damp while plant
is getting established; once plant has unfurled its leaves water liberally.
Elephant Ears like to be kept damp, we suggest that you mulch the soil
to retain moisture.
• Feeding: Feed when planting with an
all purpose, slow release fertilizer (we suggest you try something organic)
and again when the plant is fully established and leaves are unfurled.
• Bulb Reuse: Plan to dig bulbs up when
temperatures go below 40F at night. When the temperatures begin to drop,
stop watering to allow the bulb to begin to dry out. Trim foliage to
around 2” above soil level and dig up bulb. Trim off the remaining
stems and roots, dust dirt off and store in a cool dry place that does
not get below 40F.
• Indoor Use: Only the Alocasia (upright)
can be grown indoors year round. Colocasia will go dormant.
• Origin: Costa Rica
• Warning: NOT for human consumption!
